The Environmental Services Department is responsible for controlling the factors that affect public health and cause damage to property and infrastructure, and for maintaining the aesthetic value of the environment achieved through a combination of advocacy, education, collaboration and enforcement reaching everywhere from private premises to public markets and schools.

1. Where We Are Now

The department currently runs monthly sanitation exercises, inspects markets, schools and food premises, manages waste evacuation and drainage clearing, and enforces sanitation regulations across Ikorodu North.

2. What We Do Now

Core Duties

• Advising authorities and management on the formulation, execution and review of environmental and public health policies and programmes
• Giving professional advice on preventive approaches to environmental and public health problems
• Coordinating all environmental health activities of the LGA
• Initiating policies in relevant fields of environmental health
• Participating in and organising programmes, seminars and workshops on environmental issues
• Collaborating with other departments Women Affairs & Poverty Alleviation, Education, Community Development and Agriculture on environmental programmes
• Routine inspection of domestic, commercial and industrial premises to detect and abate statutory and structural nuisances
• Routine food and regulated-premises inspection to ensure factories, stores and public eating houses comply with food hygiene and safety guidelines
• Regular supervision of market sanitation, ensuring traders comply with minimum sanitation requirements
• Inspection of public and private schools to ensure minimum sanitation standards are maintained
• Enforcement of extant laws and regulations through prosecution of defaulters
• Waste management, including clearing of illegal waste dumpsites (black spots)
• Evacuation of silted drains to ensure free flow of runoff water and prevent flooding
• Pest and vector control (fumigation) to eliminate public health pests and prevent communicable disease
• Water sanitation and noise pollution control
• Public education, enlightenment and sensitisation on sound sanitation and personal hygiene through seminars and workshops

3. Where We Intend to Be

The department is working toward more frequent drainage evacuation ahead of the rainy season, expanded market inspection coverage, and stronger enforcement against illegal dumping keeping pace with a growing population's sanitation needs.
