About Women Affairs & Poverty Alleviation
The Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) unit is dedicated to empowering women, youths, and vulnerable groups, and
supporting initiatives that lift families out of poverty within Ikorodu North LCDA.
What We Do
1. Women’s Economic Empowerment
- Linking women to skills acquisition programmes, vocational trainings, and small‑scale enterprise support
- Encouraging access to micro‑credit, cooperative schemes, and empowerment projects
- Supporting women’s participation in leadership and decision‑making at community level
2. Poverty Reduction and Livelihoods
- Coordinating local aspects of poverty alleviation programmes
- Identifying poor and vulnerable households for inclusion in empowerment or support schemes
- Partnering with government agencies, NGOs, and private sector for livelihood programmes
3. Protection and Social Inclusion
- Promoting awareness on the rights of women and children
- Encouraging the reporting and addressing of gender‑based violence and harmful practices (through appropriate channels)
- Ensuring that programmes are inclusive of widows, single mothers, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups
4. Advocacy and Community Engagement
- Working with community and religious leaders to promote gender equity and family wellbeing
- Organising community dialogues, sensitisation campaigns, and commemorative events (e.g. International Women’s Day)
Why It Matters to the Public
When women and vulnerable groups are empowered:
- Household incomes increase and children are better cared for
- Communities become more stable, peaceful, and productive
- The local economy grows as more people are engaged in meaningful work
The WAPA unit helps build a more inclusive and prosperous Ikorodu North for everyone.
